A Kids' Day Out at Elemental UK Beach Club, Cornwall

Clad in wetsuits and helmets, my three sons – aged 12, 11 and 7 – marched down Falmouths’ Swanpool Beach, clambered aboard awaiting bell-boats and set sail. Within minutes they were out of sight around the bay, with barely a glance behind them.

They were in the safe hands of Elemental UK, a family-friendly firm hosting all sorts of beach- and water-based fun in Falmouth and at a second site at Tolcarne Beach in Newquay, the latter handy for Sands Hotel & Resort. As the two coastlines vary, so do the activities offered. The generally calm waters of Falmouth are great for coasteering, for example, while Atlantic Newquay is the place for surfing.

The beauty of the school-holiday kids' club, which my boys took part in at Swanpool Beach, is that children get a taster of several different activities. It’s also very flexible – you can sign them up for just a single morning or afternoon, for a whole day, or for a whole week. If the weather is very iffy and it has to be called off, you get your money back.

Activities vary according to the weather, the tides and the ages of kids – the minimum age for the beach club is six, and they don’t need to be able to swim as buoyancy aids are provided for everybody. My boys were delighted to try coasteering for the first time – their bell-boats took them to the secluded Sunny Cove to leap into the water from the rocks. They also paddleboarded and, in the afternoon, went out in kayaks to investigate sea caves and to have a sandcastle-building competition on another secluded beach.

The club runs most weekends from April to October and seven days a week during the school holidays, making it ideal for local and visiting parents who need a bit of a break from the kids for whatever reason but want them to have fun in the great outdoors rather than in a hotel kids’ club. My husband and I were able to get some work done in the sunshine at the Swanpool Beach Café with its free WiFi, great coffee and famous ice creams, lunching there with the kids when they took a break – although beach club kids can bring a packed lunch, so parents don’t need to stay on-site.
