There are many benefits of choosing a resort for your family holiday – most resorts, due to their size, have a vast range of facilities, from swimming pools or water complexes and sporting amenities to a choice of restaurants. They often also offer kids’ clubs and entertainment for all ages. Some also provide a choice of accommodation to suit different needs, from hotel rooms and suites to self-catering apartments and villas. With self-catering accommodation in a hotel/resort setting, you get the best of both worlds.

Not all resorts are huge and busy, though – indeed, the past few years have seen a rise in the trend for bijou resorts where you might expect the same kind of facilities on a more intimate scale.

Resorts are often available on an all-inclusive basis, which, while often not directly benefiting the local community or encouraging you to explore the surrounds, can be a good option if you’re worried about breaking your budget while away from home.

Tips

Do your research by reading feedback from previous guests – this is invaluable in finding out which rooms are best and which are to be avoided, which restaurants are good and which not so good. Overall, it will tell you whether a given resort might be just too big and noisy – or too small and quiet! – for your family.

Read up on transfer times – with younger kids, a long transfer after a lengthy flight can be a killer. Conversely, one near the airport or in the flight path may be noisy.

Check that a resort can offer all the facilities that are crucial for your holiday, whether it’s a laundry room or babysitting.

Find out if any activities, amenities or equipment need to be booked before arrival, to avoid disappointment. Find out if particular brands of, for instance, formula, are available locally; if not, take them with you if possible or arrange to have them delivered via a specialist company.

Try to get out of the resort at least a couple of times during your visit, to avoid cabin fever but also to experience local life and benefit local communities by spending more there.
