How to get to Hong Kong

Hong Kong is amazingly well connected, so getting to and from it is relatively stress-free (especially since an awardwinning new airport replaced the rather hair-raising Kai Tak!). Frequent flights from London and many UK regional airports take around 10hrs, with Hong Kong 7hrs ahead of GMT (so factor jet-lag into family holidays).

In terms of getting around when you’re there, beware that pushing a buggy along the packed pavements, through busy street markets and up the many hills can be tricky, so take something lightweight or, better still, a ‘baby’ carrier.

Hong Kong’s underground is clean and safe but does, again, get crowded, so a lightweight, easy foldable stroller is essential.

Riding Hong Kong’s ferries is not only a great way of getting around but good (and cheap!) family entertainment in itself  – especially the famous green-and-white Star Ferry chugging back and forth between Kowloon and Hong Kong Island, offering great views of the harbour with its junks, hydrofoils, sampans and barges. You can also pick up ferries to Lantau, Lamma and Cheung Chau islands.
