Hotels and resorts with their very own water park or free access to one right nearby are hugely popular. They’re perfect for having fun together as a family or as places where older kids can go off and do their own thing without straying too far. And they’re also great for cooling down when the mercury rises.

We’ve brought you our hand-picked recommendations for family destinations with water parks or water-park access all over the world.

Mainland Spain
This is one of the warmest places in Europe, and offers family fun in abundance in the form of everything from sandy beaches, hidden coves, lively seaside resorts and cities and villages rich in culture and traditions to water parks, museums and nature reserves.
Stay: Aquasplash Estival Resort, Costa Dorada with unlimited access to the Aquopolis waterpark 10 minutes’ walk away between mid-May and October. At the hotel itself there are three pools and a spa with 50 water features.

Quick and easy to reach and blessed with a lovely year-round climate that makes them perfect for half-term holidays, the main Canary Islands of Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote are brilliant for families, with child-friendly beaches and facilities galore as well as fascinating volcanic landscapes to explore.
Stay: Compostela Beach Golf Apartments, Playa de las Americas, Tenerife where all-inclusive packages include days out at Siam Park, deemed one of the world’s best water parks.

With warm weather, inviting seas and hospitable people, as well as mountains, olive groves, tavernas and boats, Greece is a justifiably popular family holiday destination, whether you stick to the mainland or explore one or more of its delightful islands.
Stay: Atlantica Porto Bello Beach, Helona Beach, Kos with its own water park as well as a massive salt-water pool and a location right beside a sandy beach complete with pedalos and a playground.

Linking Europe with Asia, Turkey is utterly compelling, including along its Mediterranean coast with its azure waters and classical ruins. The latter is a a great-value family holiday destination, with child-friendly beaches, wonderful sailing and quaint inland villages to discover.
Stay: Ali Bey Club, Manavgat, Antalya Area where everything’s super-sized, from the 25,000-square-metre waterpark to the 62 tennis courts.

This is an island of myths and legends, but its many superb artefacts and ruins rub shoulders with some of the most beautiful beaches in the Med and other stunning scenery, and the food is just gorgeous.
Stay: Leonardo Laura Beach & Splash Resort, Paphos which cherry-picked some hair-raising slides for its water park, including the white-knuckle Boomerango and a huge Super Bowl, all within arm’s reach of a sand-and-shingle bay.

More than 7,000 islands dot the area from the east coast of Florida to the northern tip of South America, with the various groups of them each offering something different for families, from piratical history to diving and snorkelling at some of the world’s best sites.
Stay: Grand Memories Splash Punta Cana, Bavaro, Punta Cana, Dominican Republic with its water park. It also packs in pools, restaurants and plenty of sports and activities, and sits close to a sandy beach that hosts everything from volleyball to snorkelling.
